DETAINED!!! *faints* i only got wind of it when i went to see what had delayed them. but thank god everything was resolved in the end.

and oh the shopping haha. who can forget about the shopping, where primark and h&m were godsend. :) adyll, mich, rhoda and myself contributed over a 100 pounds altogether in that one afternoon in primark hurhur.

waiting for the tube.

the tube was surprisingly easy to navigate once one gets the hang out of it. the only irritating thing? the numerous maintenance, delays and disruptions that occur throughout the entire day. bah.

scruffy takes the tube!

i decided to opt out of the LOTR musical that the three of them wanted to watch in the evening. we kinda chilled out around covent garden for a while, bumped into beng hee who was going to meet his friend and then i wandered off by myself. i didn't exactly want to wander too far off, so i went back to oxford circus again, checking out the legendary marks & spencer before doing one more round of primark 15 minutes before they closed.

should have just bought it and hung it in adyll's car heh.

a series of OH NOs. harris who left for amsterdam in the afternoon found out that the airport has misplaced his luggage!!! adyll misplaced his camera earlier in the morning and the left baggage counter has not reported any loss. and we're leaving for venice at 6am the next morning. we collected our luggage before midnight and lazed around for a while around victoria station before they started chasing people out. we made our way to the place where our coach would leave for stansted, and dozed off on the steps of some shopping mall, out in the open air. as the night went on, it got colder and colder, and lonelier and lonelier. perhaps this is what it feelsl ike to be cold and homeless.

victoria station, with a cute boy right in front :)

4am finally came, and THANK GOD. we whisked our tired selves up, and then it was off to venice.

st petersburgers are the yummiest.

st petersburg has been like a dream for me.

the flight to london wasn't that unbearable as i thought, and the food wasn't as unbearable as i thought. it felt almost like an extended bus ride from tampines to kent ridge, with way more comfortable seats and free flow beverage and beautiful clouds to watch outside the window haha.

my first experience with natural aircon was REFRESHING. too bad my SD card broke down, or else i'll show you how i soaked up that few seconds of london air before i got shoved into heathrow again. anyways. INTERNET IS FREKKING EXPENSIVE IN HEATHROW CAN! 1 pound for 10 minutes. omg. daylight robbery.

and then we got whisked off to st petersburg. woot. the ride from pulkovo international airport was spent ooh-ing and wow-ing before we got bored and all fell asleep. the hotel facade was undergoing renovation, and it looked slightly better than a building that went through WWII, or so i imagine. the room was small but cosy, and we had the view of the.... *drumroll* carpark. -_-

kopped from irene.

the rest of the days passed by in a whirlwind. whether it was daylight or not, all the sightseeing, walking and occasional practice ensured that i dozed off the moment i hit the sheets, daylight or not. frankly speaking, white nights were not exactly spectacular; it's just broad daylight in the middle of the night that's all. *shrugs*

absorbing st petersburg under our skin.

before we went in and did our thing.

the lovely sopranos :)

the lovely glinka capella.

and then we performed and we won. we screamed, we laughed, we cried, we hugged, we sang. : )

on another note,

something that some of us found in a local drug store.

i should have just bought some back as souveniers for some of you guys ;)

i'm still alive.

just not blogging much over here right now. as some you might have known, i've got myself a tiny little space over in livejournal.

not going to abandon here, but i just lazy with the copy and paste business. am still reading, am still concerned. :)
rat poison

"I'm a chef," he said, speaking to me and the woman sitting between us. "My cuisine is known around the world!"

"Really!?" the woman said. "Are you famous for a culinary specialty?"

"Yes," he said. "Rat poison."

"The woman drew back. "You're joking."

"No,
it's true. I make the world's best selling rat poison. It's called
Bocaraton, 'rat's mouth' or 'mouses's mouth,' like the city in Florida.
I never understood why anyone would want to live in a city with such a
name. But it's perfect for my specialty, which I sell all over the
world - in Dubai, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Boston, South America,
wherever there are rats. I have thirty percent of the international
rat-poison market."

"What's your secret?" I asked.

"My
competitors approach rat poison the wrong way," he said. "They study
rats. I study people." Signor Donadon pointed at my plate with his
fork. "Rats eat what people eat."

I glanced down at my fegato alla veneziana and suddenly saw my dinner in a different light.

"Venetian
rats would be very happy to eat what you have on your plate," he said,
"because they're used to eating that kind of food. But German rats
would not be interested at all. They prefer German cuisine - wurstel,
Wiener schnitzel. So for Germany I made a rat poison that is forty-five
percent pork fat. My French rat poison has butter in it. For America I
use vanilla, granola, popcorn, and a little margarine, because
Americans eat very little butter. I base my New York rat poison on
vegetable oils and essential oils with orange fragrance to remind the
rats of hamburgers and orange juice. For Bombay I add curry. For Chile,
fish meal.

"Rats are very adaptable. If their hosts go on fad
diets, then rats go on the diets, too. I maintain thirty research
stations around the world so I can update the tastes and flavours of my
poisons in order to make them consistent with the latest trends in
human dining."

"What's in your Italian rat poison?" I asked.

"Olive
oil, pasta, honey, espresso, green-apple juice, and Nutella. Especially
Nutella. I buy tons of it. Rats love it. I told the Nutella company I
would be happy to endorse it on televison, and they said, 'Oh, God, no!
We beg you. Please tell no one!'"

The woman sitting on the far
side of Signor Donadon put both of her hands flat on the table as if to
steady herself. "I simply will not listen to a discussion of rats while
I'm having my dinner!" she said, and then, as much in the spirit of
melodrama as anger, she turned her back.

Signor Donadon
continued unperturbed. "Everyone is fascinated by rats. Even people who
say they're not. What they really mean to say is, 'Oh, that's
disgusting, I can't bear it, tell me more!'"

The couple on my left, I noticed, had stopped talking aout the Fenice and were giving Donadon their full attention.

"But if a rat is hungry," I said, "won't it eat just about anything?"

"Absolutely,"
said Signor Donadon, "but rats are better fed than ever, because
there's more garbage than ever. So they've become ever choosy about
what they eat. In the 1950s, people used to throw only half of one
percent of their food into the garbage, and rats had to eat whatever
they could find. Today seven percent of our food ends up in the
garbage, and it's a never-ending banquet for rats. The challenge for
me, is to make my rat poison more appetising than garbage. Garbage is
the real competition.

From The City of Falling Angels, by John Berendt.

an
intriguing excerpt that i found from the above travelogue on venice. i
was literally giggling away, but it made me wonder at the same time.
was having this discussion with queenbitch just yesterday.

many
a times we concentrate so much on the little nitty gritty details that
we often forget to take a look at the broader scheme of things, and
even the big picture.

time to take a step back, for the time being. :)

WHATEVER.

i was looking forward to the report that was going to be published by the committee of inquiry on mas selamat's arrest.

seems
like i'm duly disappointed. what was available to the public was only
but an executive summary of 6 pages, when i thought they said full
details will be released to the public. the content was dismal.

"In a re-enactment requested by the COI, a GC guard took 49 seconds
to climb out of the ventilation window in the urinal, scale the fence,
climb onto the roof of the enclosed staircase and walkway, and jump
over the converged perimeter fences."

"Nonetheless, the COI asked for a re-enactment of the shortest and most direct route from outside the coverged fences to the Pan Island Expressway. This attempt was made by a young investigation officer and it took him 2 minutes 44 seconds to do so."

how is it possible that they've considered the shortest time it took for mas selemat to escape from the detention centre to PIE, instead of the longest time
instead? even if he had taken the chance to survey the environment
through that small little window, he couldn't have worked out the
shortest route to the PIE just from that same window.

and of course, not withstanding the fact that renactments were carried out with fit young gurkhas and isd officers.

so, how can they "believe
that 11 minutes between 3:54pm and 4:05pm would have provided Mas
Selamat with ample time to make good his escape from the time he
entered the toilet"? by taking into consideration the shortest
time that he MIGHT have took to escape from the detention centre?
wouldn't that presuppose that someone had already planned the route for
him then? then why the "COI finds no evidence of connivance or
collusion with or assistance given to Mas Selamat in his escape on the
part of any individual?"

like seriously, whatever. i
couldn't be bothered really to read what happened after that, though i
did a brief skim through. whatever was published, probably were to
protect the asses of wong kan seng and his ministry, as well as the
isd.

oh yar, another statement also goes to prove that the
people up there, they seriously have no feel of whatever's going on the
ground.

"... a WRDC staff did a walkabout to review the status
of renovations some time between April and May 2007 and detected the
ventilation window without grilles. Instead of having it
grilled, the Superintendent instructed that the handle of the
ventilation window be sawn off as a security measure."

i
have only one thing to say: seems like our cream of the crop may have
received the best education and scored the highest marks, but they lack
the common sense that even 7-year-olds have.

wtf.

whatever it is, i still do not believe that mas selamat escaped without any help at all.
